Chula Vista Club 108 and Sweetwater Valley Club go head-to-head in a debate.

On Thursday, May 1st, the Sweetwater Valley Club joined Chula Vista Club 108 for a lively debate. Each club selected two teams of three to go head-to-head in two rounds of a blind debate. Debate topics were chosen at random from an envelope, and each three-person team took turns debating either in favor or against the debate topic. Each of the two debate rounds allowed for a five-minute recess for teams to strategize and prepared for the debate. During this time, members and guests were treated to a lively round of Table Topics.

Debate Topic 1: Should the work week be reduced to four days?

Chula Vista Club 108 won the coin toss and chose to argue in favor of the topic with Sweetwater Valley Club arguing against. Both teams presented persuasive arguments and facts for the benefits and drawbacks of a four-day work week, leaving the audience and judges impressed with the depth and breadth of research conducted during the five-minute preparation period. After all three members of each team argued their points, the judges announced Chula Vista Club 108 as the winner of round 1.

Debate Topic 2: Should all schools require students to wear uniforms?

Sweetwater Valley Club won the coin toss and chose to argue in favor with Chula Vista Club 108 arguing against. Each of the debate participants presented passionate points for why school uniforms would or would not achieve specific objectives, such as equity and improved focus and performance. Sweetwater Valley Club prevailed as the winner of round 2.

Debate night was a dynamic and entertaining theme, and fun was had by all. Thank you to all who made this debate possible. We look forward to the next one!
